JAMBO IN THE HEADLINES

The Ft. Worth Star Telegram ran an article in the Sunday Business section about "three Texas companies that are charting their own unique paths to becoming the next web superstars."

Dallas-based Jambo was profiled for their unique approach to social networking. Jambo's software turns laptops and other Wi-Fi-enabled devices into a radar for nearby people who share common interests. Great for networking at events, as attendees of SXSW 2006 discovered. "Those who downloaded Jambo's software were asked to single out their interests and the type of people they wanted to meet. That created a kind of wireless matchmaker for people at the convention. At South by Southwest, for example, people hooked into Jambo were able to find like-minded attendees even when outside the Austin Convention Center."

Jambo took advantage of the great marketing opportunities at SXSW 2006. To find out how you can get exposure at the next SXSW, contact Katie King.

NET NEUTRALITY EXPLAINED IN LANGUAGE EVEN A SENATOR CAN UNDERSTAND

The preservation of net neutrality is serious business. But, sometimes, humor provides the best vehicle for explanation of such weighty matters.

Consider the following clip from the Daily Show, which pokes fun at current efforts to create a hierarchical, two-tiered system of web delivery. The skit by Jon Stewart and John Hodgman lampoons the recent gaffe by Alaska Senator Ted Stevens in comparing the Internet to a series of tubes (as opposed to a lowly dumptruck).

And when you have finished laughing, be sure to sign the petition to preserve net neutrality at SavetheInternet.org, thereby ensuring that alternative content such as this video continues to be accessible to all on the web.

YOU'VE GOT E-MAIL: AND THE FBI WANTS TO HAVE THE POWER TO READ IT

At a time when the United States Senate continues to debate the future of net neutrality, a recent story on CNet reveals that the federal government is seeking the power to monitor all e-mall transmissions in this country. According to the report by Declan McCullagh, "The FBI has drafted sweeping legislation that would require Internet service providers to create wiretapping hubs for police surveillance and force makers of networking gear to build in backdoors for eavesdropping." As noted in by CNet, the proposed legislation would require any manufacturer of "routing" and "addressing" hardware to offer upgrades or other modifications that are needed to support Internet wiretapping -- it would also authorize the expansion of wiretapping requirements to commercial Internet services including instant messaging if the FCC deems it to be in the public interest.

While we understand that monitoring e-mail may enable the government to prevent some criminal activity, we strongly dispute that the imagined benefits of this surveillance will outweigh the clear loss of privacy that will ensue if these policies are implemented. Stay tuned for more information on this disturbing story. Journalist, programmer, photographer, and Politech founder Declan McCullagh pictured at right.

As part of a promotion in the July edition of the SXSW Interactive Festival monthly listserve, Tina Silverstein has won a FREE registration to the second annual BlogHer Conference, scheduled July 28-29 in San Jose. Congrats to Tina on her winnings. And, congrats as well to Elisa Camahort, Jory Des Jardins, Lisa Stone and all the other great folks at BlogHer on all the pre-event buzz surrounding their two-day celebration of personal publishing from a female perspective. In addition to organizing the incredible confab in July, these three women helped put together several intriguing panels at the 2006 SXSW Interactive Festival. In fact, their organizational efforts were instrumental in terms of getting more top-notch women involved as both speakers and attendees at last year's event.
