Teledildonics Podcast Up (as it were)

h1 Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006

I’ve posted a recording to the Internet Archives of Kyle Marchulis demoing his teledildonics device in a hotel room in the Drikill Hotel on Saturday night at SXSW 2006.

Kyle runs the open source teledildonics website www.slashdong.org and was a panelist on “The Secret Sex Life of Games” panel this year.

Well, I finally did it — my first podcasting! I ran around all through the Interactive Festival with a Creative Zen Vision:M in hand, recording interviews with anyone interesting I could get to sit still for 15 minutes or so (not counting Marc Canter, who I interviewed as we party-hopped on the last night of the festival).

Maybe when I get a little more confident with these, I’ll run them “naked”, but for now, I’m cleaning them up a bit before posting. I’ve got the first few posted on my About.com site. All three are with bootstrapping entrepreneurs at various stages of development, talking about the challenges of starting a tech business in the post-bubble climate:

  • Bijoy Goswami of Aviri talks about both the philosophical and practical aspects of bootstrapping as an approach all businesses can use.
  • Jim Young of Jambo Networks tells about the benefit of launching at the DEMO conference, and how they used a blog to build buzz leading up to it.
  • Jay Flanzbaum of Online Gigs discusses the challenges and lessons learned from being a non-techie running a tech company.

Other folks I interviewed and will post shortly include Chris Pirillo (Lockergnome), Marc Canter (Macromedia/Broadband Mechanics), Matt Mullenweg (WordPress), Heath Row (Squidoo/Fast Company), Brian Oberkirch (on the situation in New Orleans for entrepreneurs) and Dave Panos (Pluck).

IA Echo In the Playpen

h1 Sunday, March 19th, 2006

The IA Playpen took on a new life as a Music Fest fun spot this week. TONS of rock and roll kids and their parents dropped in to play.

Mysterious patterns began to emerge….

And much fun was had by all for days and days after IA had ended!

See you all next year! Bring More Toys!!

Help Katrina Kids!

Support Katrina Kids

We need volunteers to develop/deliver online fund raising in support of kids impacted by Katrina. A lot of work is going on to rebuild critical infrastructure, so we started Project Connect to support the kids. Project Connect provides students an online digital magazine to share their creative voice and a secured means to collaborate within the context of their school environment.

Educators are telling us how important it is to give these kids a voice and show them support. They feel abandoned by the system and for many it is worse now than in the fall as it sinks in they are not going home.

We need to raise at least $100,000 to keep the program going. We already have 80 teachers signed up and partnerships with chapters of Communities in Schools and the National Writing project. But need to raise funds in order to continue to provide the program free to all kids in Louisiana, Mississippi and those scattered across the US, as well as their new host schools.

Details are on our web site, www.ct2inc.org, and our partner who is hosting Project Connect, www.4empowerment.com . Folks can contribute online through using PAYPAL.

If you have a passion for the kids and expertise in online fund raising, please shoot me an email. We really could use your help in generating online word of mouth and contributions.

Sincerely,

Martha Gimbut

With all the talent in Austin - Why Bruce Sterling?

h1 Tuesday, March 14th, 2006

If SXSW needs to promote a local talent, why not look for writers who actually have original ideas?  Sterling has been pumping his evangelical horn for a decade and still comes up a negative and uneducated doomsayer.

Cool Apps

h1 Tuesday, March 14th, 2006

While we’ve all been hitting up the panels and parties, I’ve spotted some cool apps that apply to Interactive at the Trade Show.

If you’re around during the Music Conference, you might want to check out imeem at the Trade Show. A peer to peer network, they have a killer UI that handles various media. You can post private or public podcasts in addition to photos. They’re also hosting a party tonight, so all you Gold and Platinum Badge holders can check out the party and app tonight if you missed it at the trade show. Also, they’ll be around for SXSW Music this week.

Another cool app that invidkllr tipped me off about is eyespot. Here you can upload, share, and EDIT your videos all on a browser based app.

Has anyone else seen any apps that really caught their attention during the festival? I’m really curious about all the GoogleMaps apps. I missed the panel because I was attending an e-Learning panel.
