Dogma Free: Stephanie Says

h1 Monday, March 13th, 2006

Stephanie and I were in school together, and we worked at the same hellish dot-com. I moved to New York to work for a big finanical services company and the last I heard she was doing freelance work somewhere in Portland. So waiting in line to register Saturday (it took forever) who do I see? Let me tell you, she looked great. You know how sometimes people have that glow or whatever? So we start catching up, and I tell her about work, what we’re up to, the hassles, the hustles, the struggle, the fight. Lots of pointless research, lots of design-by-committee, clueless management—you know, the usual.

“You too, right?”

Stephanie just smiles.

“What?” I said.

“Nothing,” she says. “Go on.”

“Hey, come on, we snorted No-Doz and shotgunned Jolt for twelve straight days in 1999. Just because we haven’t seen each other in a while doesn’t mean you can’t tell me what you think.”

“ . . . ”

I raise my eyes archly. “What, your job’s not like that?”

You can be like Stephanie. Be DOGMA FREE. Join us on Tuesday at 3:30 to find out how. See http://tinyurl.com/q2z7j for more.

At the Frog party last night I was speaking to a stranger and we were discussing the increased presence of women (yeah!) at the conference. We chit chatted about how great it was, etc but as he looked out across the space packed with people he sounded haunted when he asked “But what do the women WANT?”.

I promptly informed him that we had convened before the conference secretly and were sworn to not let any man actually ever know what we want. In fact, should I accidently reveal our super secret plan to take over the world, I might be required to kill him.

I could see this response unnerved him, so I gave him the other, not top secret answer.  We want to be part of the dialogue. We want credit for our contributions. We want respect for our ideas. We want to change the world and make people think. We want to lead, and follow, and stand side by side while we forge this cyberspace future. Oh, and we want more women’s bathrooms by the panel rooms.

I hope this helps anyone else who might be struggling with the gender gap.

And to all my lovely fem sisters, please don’t be offended. His sincerely wanted to know in a a “how-can-I-improve-this-interface” kind of way.

meet-up mash-up area?

just curious if there is a physical or online board for posting positings/partners/skills/etc somewhere at SXSWi??? Seems like a no brainer as you can’t talk to everyone.

Would also love to see a list of all the start-ups that come out of SXSWi and be able to compair that to how many are around next year….

For those of you who attended Tantek’s presentation yesterday on Creating Building Blocks for Independents, you may have heard the story of the evolution of BarCamp…and how it has spread. If anyone living in Houston or the surrounding areas is interested in starting something similar, leave a comment and let me know.

Just to let everyone know, the BarCampHouston page is now up! If you are interested in participating in BarCampHouston, please add your name to the campers list ;)

Time, Memory and the Web

h1 Sunday, March 12th, 2006

Geolocation and mapping have gone from cute hacks of interest to geographers and direction seekers to an inextricable part of the way we view the web. But what about time? Almost every action we take or piece of content we create on the web is timestamped, but the time axis is rarely the primary organizing principle. Attention/Intention streams are related, but don’t represent a truly general view. Or maybe I’m wrong. If you’re at SXSWi and interested in talking about the issues involved in moving along, warping, annotating, correlating and interpreting events on the time axis, then comment on this post, email cks@eventmirror.com or catch me on the #sxsw irc channel or on iChat.
