One of the surprise sensations of 2007 was the emergence of Hinder, led by singing sensation Austin Winkler. Their hit, “Lips of an Angel” was a chart topper nation-wide and has become a top 40 radio station standard. Their throwback to classic rock styles have struck a chord with a generation that grew up on Metallica while still attracting a younger group.
The rock and roll band formed in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (who knew rock could come out of Oklahoma??) back in 2001 and has been living the struggling life of a rock band until their big hit finally came. The band consists of three guys: Cody Hanson at the drums, Joe “Blower” Garvey on guitar, and Austin Winkler as the group’s vocalist. Hinder not only calls back to a more classic rock and roll era through musical riffs, but the entire attitude is that of the rock and roll lifestyle. Songs like “Get Stoned,” “Lips of an Angel,” and a cover of “Born to be Wild” (licensed by NASCAR) reverberate the call of living on the edge.
Hinder is actively touring and continually working on their sound as a band. This is fairly notable in their easy-to-find group photos where each member of the band is trying to look cooler than the guy he’s standing next to and wears a scowl that says “I play rock and roll, so shut up.” This is not uncommon in their field of talent, but Hinder is not a particularly uncommon rock and roll group. There’s nothing wrong with that (if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it), though it does give them the potential to fade into forgotten-dom if they can’t keep kicking out the pop-friendly songs like “Lips.”

A great new feature of the web is the ability to get updated and accurate information on just about anything. This has made some services, like classic phone directories, practically obsolete. Why go somewhere where you have to guess the right category and hope that the number and address in your year-old book are still correct? Online resources not only give you more accurate information, you can also usually find reviews and feedback from actual patrons of the stores you’re looking for.
For example, let’s say I decided to visit the UK and I wanted to find out more about some British bakeries I should visit while I’m in town. I could look them up in a paper guide, but how do I know which ones I really must go to and which ones aren’t worth the stop? This is where user feedback is invaluable. And what’s the best way to get solid user feedback for businesses? A BizWiki. What’s particularly great about business wiki sites is that the entire thing is open to editing and correction. You are not just limited to reviews, but are also able to add or modify existing businesses, a feature you will never see on a phone directory’s site. So for next time you’re in town or if you just want to share some UK business ratings, do the whole world a favor and let them know in the UK BizWiki.

The internet truly has revolutionized the way video streams on the internet. This has had major impacts on how television and movie studios alike have had to approach how their video gets distributed. It’s made video more accessible for people and groups who could not have spread their message so easily previously. While it’s caused some woes to the professional producers from time to time, overall it has a great net benefit to broadcasting on the whole.
One necessity for all Internet-shared videos is the ability to find and capture these videos from the web and then the ability to convert those videos into something you can actually use (what good is a video you’d like to carry with you if you can’t get it to your iPod?) There are great tools out there for such a purpose though, one of which that I’ve discovered by a company called Ares. Their first piece of software, ares ultra, gives users an easy-to-use interface for finding P2P (peer to peer) files online. It then makes downloading a snap and is very simple for the “everyday” user. Note - if you are a Windows Vista user, you would want to consider the ares vista software, which is made particularly for full Vista compatibility (but is still backwards compatible). Another useful resource is the ares tube software. It makes it easy to take YouTube videos you like and convert them into something you can play back on your PC or carry on another device.

Let’s face it - LA is a cool place to visit. It’s the entertainment capital of the world (forget Vegas’ claims to that title - there’s a lot of entertaining going on in Vegas, but, as the commercials say, it stays in Vegas - Hollywood produces world wide blockbusters). My biggest regret of my visit to LA was simply not knowing what to do while I was there. I’d heard of a lot of great things to see, but the most adventure I saw was randomly accidentally driving onto a movie lot only to be asked to leave by security. That’s why it’s great that there are services just for the tourists that really want to get the best experience out of their time in the sunny city. Places like the Hollywood Sight Seeing Tours give you a great experience at a great rate and really does make the most of your vacation. They have lots of packages available too, from a basic (my recommendation) city tour and movie star home tour to a shopping trip to Tijuana (also lots of fun). Just some things to keep in mind next time your in the home of the stars.

I have to admit that growing up with multiple pets had its pros and cons. For one, it was a great experience getting to learn about respecting animals and responsibility. Plus, I liked the companionship of cats (the ones with personality) and dogs. But, let’s face it, they can be smelly, loud, and dirty creatures. That’s why I’ve gone the way of the fish as an adult.
I’ve had a variety of fish(es?) so far, but I haven’t had a great success rate. I’ve tried bettas, various goldfish, some tetras, and those sucky-fishes (I can never remember their actual names). One friend was telling me to consider a barb fish. I’ve done some homework on the subject, but still can’t decide between the tiger barb and the tinfoil barb. It turns out that the tinfoil barb (at least in my opinion) looks better but is a little more difficult to breed, which is important to me). Any input on this would be invaluable!

I have a confession - I just can’t get enough of those crazy flash games out there on the web. I recently discovered a new site (as if I didn’t have enough of these already) with a collection of games. None of them are particularly amazing, but if you’re in the mood for some just all-around fun games, I have to recommend it. The beauty of online games is zero downloading, so you’re not stuck with a bunch of performance-decreasing games on your hard drive. And one of the things I like most about Khemer.com is a very simple categorization scheme (broken down into online racing games, online shooting games, online sport games, etc.). I don’t think it’s a native-english speaking site, though, but don’t get distracted by that. The games are still good!
You’d think with all my practice in wasting time at school, I’d have better ways to waste it in the working world - but you’d be wrong…
