Remember that your background and culture are just as strange to others as theirs is to you. Try to put yourself in others’ shoes and consider that, again, most people are pretty good and just want to be happy.

Another key to surviving is to stay in touch with your roots. A calling card is a sound investment. It’s nice to have a solid foundation with some support from friends and family. They know your culture and where you come from and can really serve as an anchor. Get a reasonably priced phone card and remember to keep in touch. Family and friends not only lend support but are a great emotional outlet for sharing feelings of fear or misunderstanding in a new place. Just remember to get an international calling card and not a domestic. Believe it or not, such a thing exists and does *not* let you call internationally without exorbitant costs.
