Cell phones to keep in touch? That’s it?

I’ll admit it. I’m a gadget guy. I love gadgets. What value do they add to life? Often, none. But I have to give props to the people who are able to now take stuff that already had a common, useful function and make it a gadget.

A perfect example: the cell phone. A cell phone started out as a phone that you could take anywhere. Remember old cell phones? Pure utility devices. They had a display to show you the number you were dialing and a battery indicator. They had about 12 keys and the fancy ones would flip open and shut.

It’s amazing how things have changed. A cell phone without a QWERTY keyboard is becoming harder to find. There are 1 million accessories available, from ring tones to mobile games and cell phone wallpapers. Cell phone wallpapers? Custom? What happened to a simple display with a few buttons? Gadgetism!

Now I’m not complaining. I think it’s great that Cell phones are so much more than they once were. Many investors are seeing the future of ecommerce going to the phone, even. Now, I love gadgets, but at some point we’re going too far, right? I mean, I can’t imagine being in such a hurry that I can’t go shopping, so I have to just pop in on my phone and grab a new pair of shoes. Well, by any means, props to my gadget-pushers out there.
