How to Create Passionate Users - Saturday, March 11th
What do game designers, neurobiologists, and filmmakers know about creating passionate users? How can we take better advantage of how the brain works to reach our users at a deep emotional level that inspires their enthusiasm and participation? The latest research in cognitive science, brain chemistry, and psychology can help you figure out how to get attention and keep it.We'll look at how to work around the brain's natural filters that keep your message from getting in. We'll explore the techniques game developers use to keep users engaged and wanting more, and how these techniques can be applied to virtually any kind of communication. Most importantly, we'll look at the lessons learned from the organizations and individuals who've succeeded at turning on the hearts and brains of their users.Whether you're looking to drive up the hits on your web site, increase membership and involvement, or build a passionate "fan" base around your product, service,or cause, the answer lies in reverse engineering the things for which people are passionate, and finding ways to implement those same attributes in what we offer.

Designing for Global and Local Social Play - Saturday, March 11th
In the rush to get everything online, we envisioned a global village where people would connect with others across space and time. Yet, the vast majority of people socialize with people in their small social world. We want access to all the world's knowledge and information but we want to share it locally. We want social relations to be visible, but we do not like the consequences of collapsed social contexts and flattened social structures. What does it mean to interact globally and locally at the same time? How do conceptions of urban life, social networks, mobility, and play help explain what people are doing when faced with glocalized environments? These issues come in to play when we think about tagging and folksonomy, social bookmarking, media sharing tools, reputation and recommendation systems, and everything that is dependent on building out social networks.

Online Politics: Fast, Cheap and Allows for Control - Tuesday, March 14th
New tools and technologies allow political organizers to unleash and manage activity faster, easier, and on a much more massive scale given limited staff than ever before. However, campaigns and organizations have only scratched the surface of what's possible. What's needed are more and better application designers serving the political sphere. This panel is an introduction to the field of political and non-profit online organizing for developers, web designers, and anyone interested in how the web is changing the way society and politics operates.Very simple tools -- such as MoveOn's lobby-day planner, or the GOP's Team Leader -- can allow tiny teams of organizers, or even a single organizer, to coordinate giant movements that once required an army of staff people. And thanks to the high-level frameworks onto of which web developers build, applications that mobilize millions can often be built in a day or two by a single programmer. That said, organizations, campaigns and political parties are having a terrible time finding and directing programmers to build new and powerful tools.

Beyond Folksonomies: Knitting Tag Clouds for Grandma - Saturday, March 11th
As the web evolves, contextual navigation is increasingly necessary. The top-down, authoritarian, Semantic Web approach is way too restrictive, and the bottom-up, free-love, rebelliousness of folksonomies is way too permissive. What's next? A compromise of extremes? A middle-out approach? Something completely different? Can GYM save us? Tune in to find out.

Open Source Management: Walking the Walk - Tuesday, March 14th
What would happen if a company was forthright and open about the challenges it faces? Why are companies embracing openness when it comes to their software, but not their own operation and decision-making process?Corporations fear the authenticity and vulnerability that would build trust with their customers and better products and services. And vulnerability is necessary for connection, intimacy, trust and real conversation.Blogs, wikis, the Web and other tech goodies have given us the means for exchange, and the impetus for integration within company fiefdoms but not necessarily the human skills for creating a space that allows us to genuinely exchange information, rather than just talk at each other. So, how do you gets comfortable being vulnerable? How does a company come to believe this matters? By experiencing it and its results. In this panel executed as performance/ talk show, we'll explore and *show* what happens if a company is willing to have a real, vulnerable "blog" or conversation with customers, blogging experts and regular folks.

Opening Remarks - Saturday, March 11th
Frustrated by the conventional "work-for-hire" model of the creative business, Jim Coudal of Coudal Partners and Jason Fried of 37signals have pushed their companies in a decidedly more entrepreneurial direction over the past two years. With the idea of taking a greater amount of control over the creative they produce, both firms have built products and businesses which allow them a large degree of independence and the ability to apply the crafts of design, writing and programming for their own benefit. As Coudal said in a recent article, "the only way to free yourself from the tyranny of clients is to become one."
