Over the years, art for the SXSW Interactive Festival Big Bag has been
contributed by luminaries such as Southpark's Troy Parker + Matt Stone,
poster artist Frank Kozik, and comic book kingpin Todd McFarlane.
However, in 2002, we decided to move in a slightly different direction, enlisting the help of the web community in this endeavor by launching the Big Bag Design Competition. This competition echos the ongoing open source nature of the programming and tone of the SXSW Interactive Festival.
Michael Griffith of ultramicroscopic.com won the inaugural contest with his unique red and black "Mexican wrestler" entry. Last year's winning design was submitted by Kenn Louis of rabblerouser.com. His design featured three robots -- one using a PDA, one using a cell phone and one with a notebook computer (pictured at right).
We are proud to announce the 2005 Big Bag Design Competition finalists. The winning design from these finalists will be printed on over 2500 SXSW Interactive bags for the event in March. These bags are distributed to SXSW Interactive, Gold and Platinum registrants -- who usually keep them as souvenirs of the event for years and years and years. Stay tuned -- the winning design will be revealed at the event in March!

Michael Griffith Griffith's art graced the 2003 SXSW Interactive bag and he was a finalist in 2004. Version 2005 notes the proliferation of connecting devices that haunt today's uber-geek. |
Juan Huerta Huerta imagines blue skys and a rolling green hillscape where a computer mouse watches over a field of animated eyeglasses much like an attentive shepherd. |

Meghan Ryan Ryan's artwork invokes a recurring image with Big Bag Design Competition entries: telephone poles and the ongoing interplay between old technology and new innovation. |
For information on submitting your artwork to the Big Bag Design Competition, stay tuned. We will begin accepting entries for SXSW 2006 event shortly.
