SXSW 2006 Sales & Marketing
Frustrated by the conventional "work-for-hire" model of the creative business, Jim Coudal of Coudal Partners and Jason Fried of 37signals have pushed their companies in a decidedly more entrepreneurial direction over the past two years. With the idea of taking a greater amount of control over the creative they produce, both firms have built products and businesses which allow them a large degree of independence and the ability to apply the crafts of design, writing and programming for their own benefit. As Coudal said in a recent article, "the only way to free yourself from the tyranny of clients is to become one."
Coudal Partners has created Jewelboxing, a high-end disc packaging solution for creative professionals and The Show, which records, designs, markets and manufactures limited-edition live concert recordings for bands like The Pixies and Dead Can Dance. They are finishing up a short, sponsored feature film called "Copy Goes Here" and their studio site is a real productivity sucker.
Meanwhile, under Fried's direction, 37signals has built Basecamp, Backpack and Ta-da Lists, three popular web applications for personal and business organization and communication and project management that Salon recently said "represent the future of software on the Web not just because they're elegant, easy-to-use programs that will likely make your life better." They have also developed Ruby on Rails, an open-source web application framework that's fueling the Web 2.0 revolution.
At SXSW, Coudal and Fried will discuss using yourself as a target market, building big things with small teams and answer the question, "When you are your own client, who are you going to make fun of, after work, at the bar?"
