Flatstock Screenprinting Circus is open the same hours as Flatstock.
Co-presented by the American Poster Institute (API) and South by Southwest (SXSW), FLATSTOCK 8 will display the works of more than 100 artists from across North America. Posters representing decades of styles, colors and techniques will be on display and for sale.
The best concert posters have always captured both the essence of the music they promoted and the spirit of the time in which they were produced. Flatstock provides the general public with an ongoing series of opportunities to see fine poster art in person and to meet the artists who created it.
This year includes the Flatstock Screenprinting Circus presented by API and Squeegeeville, Diesel Fuel Supply Co, Decoderring Designs, Obsolete Industries, and the contributing artists.
Flatstock, a bi-annual concert poster exhibition and collectors show, was the brainchild of Austin's son, Frank Kozik and the API, a nonprofit corporation dedicated to serving poster artists and promoting the art form worldwide. The API was formed in 2002 by a small group of poster artists and supporters who frequented the poster website, Gigposters.com; since then the API ranks have swelled to include over 240 artists and supporters. The first Flatstock show was held in San Francisco in the Fall of 2002 and it was an unqualified critical and commercial success.
The American Poster Institute is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to serving the poster artist community and promoting the art form. The Flatstock shows provide the American Poster Institute with a way to present poster artists collectively while showcasing the breadth of international styles they represent.
As part of Flatstock 8, the public is invited to drop by the on-site screenprinting circus demonstration set up by the API and its members. Running during show hours, wild and uncaged printers will produce a number of original multicolor poster prints on site over the 3 days, allowing people to see the process in action and learn how ideas and artwork are transformed into the thousands of beautiful gigposters on display at the show through the magic of the screen printing process. Artists tentatively scheduled to contribute print designs to be printed at FS8 include Ken Adams, Daniel Danger, Richie Goodtimes, Jermaine Rogers, and Michael Michael Motorcycle. These works will be available for purchase when they are completed. 8 special guest artists will also contribute small prints which will be entirely created and produced at the show.
Visitors to the demo area can take a shot at printing their own t-shirt with artwork provided by Bobby Dixon of Kollective Fusion, or get a custom Johnny Thief Seppaku Tattoo design screenprinted directly on their body. A demonstration of computer separation techniques in Photoshop by Richie Goodtimes will also be presented. API printer members will be staffing the screenprinting demo over the show and will be happy to answer questions about the process and give hands-on demonstrations.
Sponsored by API and Squeegeeville, Diesel Fuel Supply Co, Decoderring Designs, Obsolete Industries, and the contributing artists.
