<strong><em>WaSP Annual Meeting</em> - Monday, March 13th
</strong><br /><br />
Each year, the Web Standards Project holds its annual meeting at SXSW as so many WaSPs are in attendance. Last year, Microsoft Robert Scoble walked by the meeting and was told by Group Lead Molly E. Holzschlag that the meeting was closed and we'd need to catch up with him later. A bit snubbed by the exchange, Robert blogged about the incident, which in turn not only lead to the beginnings of a peace treaty between WaSP and Microsoft, but the formation of a working Task Force that's born much fruit. The turn of events was so compelling that WaSP decided to open the annual meeting to the public, allowing any interested party to observe our annual process and participate during an open exchange at the end of the session. Special commentary on WaSP, its history, and its activities will be made by its co-founder, Jeffrey Zeldman, as well as Group Lead Holzschlag and many other activity coordinators within the influential grass roots organization.

<strong><em>The New Startup Cultures</em> - Monday, March 13th
</strong><br /><br />
Joe Kraus, founder of Excite, said not long ago, "There's never been a better time to be an entrepreneur because it's never been cheaper to be one." Much has changed since the first Web boom, not the least the way that technology companies invent, build, and create value with their products. Starting a startup is a very different experience today, with more options available to people, different yet still viable business models, and multiple options for how to operate. So what does it take to be an entrepreneur these days? How can one succeed? Which choices are the best? This panel will cover four panelists talking about the choices they've made and how they worked (or didn't) for them.

<strong><em>Peter Morville Presentation: Ambient Findability</em> - Monday, March 13th
</strong><br /><br />
At the crossroads of ubiquitous computing and the Internet, the user experience is out of control, and findability is the real story. Access changes the game. We can select our sources and choose our news. We can find who and what we need, when and where we want. As society shifts from push topull, findability shapes who we trust, how we learn, and where we go. In this thought-provoking talk, best-selling author Peter Morville explores the future present in mobile and embedded devices, GPS and RFID technologies, search algorithms, findable objects, evolutionary psychology, and the long tail of the sociosemantic web.

<strong><em>Digital Preservation and Blogs</em> - Monday, March 13th
</strong><br /><br />
How will tomorrow's historians understand the development and impact of blogs? What evidence will future researchers turn to when they want to examine the influence that blogs had on Howard Dean's 2004 presidential campaign, or how a blog post disgraced 60 Minutes by revealing that what was believed by Dan Rather to be a legitimate memo about George W. Bush's military service was a forgery? What primary source material will show that it was a blogger who filed a Freedom of Information Act request and posted 361 snapshots of coffins of solders killed in the US war in Iraq? The emergence of the early web, and of blogging, stands to be like early film; if the preservation of blogs does not begin soon, most of the initial output of this new medium and genre will be lost, and future understanding will be limited to the scraps that survive. This fall, a group of students in the Library and Information School at Pratt worked on a small project to preserve a handful of blogs. Join us as we discuss the technical, social and legal problems posed by this endeavor.</p>

<strong><em>Respect Your ElderBloggers</em> - Sunday, March 12th
</strong><br /><br />
The hottest frontier for technology may be the retirement community. As the baby boomer generation ages, creating the largest elderly market segment in history, blogs and online communities are reducing isolation and mental stagnation. Are today's developers of tools, services and networks considering the needs of senior and boomer-users as they work on features, user interface, marketing and more? We'll take a look at why it's good for business to cater to the market, a look at why it's simply good to reach out to the market, and mostly at how to reach out - from development issues, to communications issues to the need for community outreach offering both technical and financial support.

<strong><em>Increasing Women's Visibility on the Web: Whose Butt Should We Be Kicking?</em> - Sunday, March 12th
</strong><br /><br />
Where are the women online? Stop asking "where are the women?" and think bigger: Why don't women have a public profile equal to their contributions? And whose fault is it? In 2005, the topic of gender, gender diversity and the lack thereof reared its head in many ways. There were very public flare-ups over the lack of women represented everywhere -- from the Op-Ed pages of major newspapers to technology conference schedules where male speakers outnumbered female speakers by ratios of 5 to 1 or worse. Given the fact that women make up half (or more) of the world population and a significant and growing segment of the technology workforce and consumer base, the issue is not that women aren't there. The issue is why women don't have a profile equal to their real participation. Women are writing tech books; women are blogging as much as men; women represent the majority of engineering undergrads, but somehow they're not stepping out from behind the curtain and sharing the spotlight. Now whose fault is that? To answer this question, BlogHer has recruited women who perceive the issue in very different ways?and therefore propose very different solutions.

<strong><em>We Got Naked, Now What?</em> - Saturday, March 11th
</strong><br /><br />
Some bloggers argue that you only become effective by putting more skin in the game, but is there such a thing as being too naked? Can you open your kimono in one blog post, and wear a button-down shirt in another? This panel showcases bloggers who opted to bring their personal lives onto their professional blogs, with varying degrees of success. Some have made an argument that you can bare all, and you should...to an extreme degree. Talk about your politics? Check. Sexuality? Check. Mental health? Check. Plenty of others - academics, attorneys, doctors - blog in full anonymity, fearful they risk their professional lives.Gender plays a huge role in this discussion. Some women feel that the pressure on women to avoid the personal is heavier, that a man talking about his kids at work is "humanized" by it while a woman talking about her kids at work elicits eye rolls. Yet, some men feel that the consequences for any show of weakness or need, e.g., emotion, can have professional consequences. Are men and women held to different standards as the personal and professional meld together? Hear from those who bare all, those who cover it all up and those who try to walk a tightrope somewhere in between. We intend to review the results of a survey of BlogHers on where they draw the lines between the personal and the professional.

<strong><em>Looking for XML in All the Wrong Places</em> - Saturday, March 11th

It seems that everywhere you turn, it's "Do XML this, do XML that." Everyone wants to do everything with XML, and we're here to provide cautionary tales of nonexistent document analysis, improper data formats (neither hierarchical nor sequential), or situations in which the markup was 10x the data being described. We won't have time to cover every blunder, but the pain we've witnessed or experienced will hopefully keep you on the straight and narrow. We promise to keep it light, but maybe audience members can learn from the mistakes we've seen out there on the mean streets of XML.

<strong><em>Public Square or Private Club: Does Exclusivity Strengthen or Dilute?</em> - Saturday, March 11th
</strong><br /><br />
What happens when online communities decide to form a group around identities -- gender, race and/or interest? Are these groups essential to creating solidarity and strength for groups ignored by the mainstream and media? Or do these groups foster separatism and marginalize members? Do these groups ultimately weaken the strength of identity-based communities by alienating people who don't ?belong? in a group, but are deeply interested in it? What works best?a public square or a private club?Created in the face of raging blog debates about the lack of diversity in a dominant community, many smaller communities online have coalesced around off-line demographics. (Widely known examples include BlogHer, Brownbloggers, and various off-shoots of political party sites.)Why? What is the value in gender-specific, race-specific, interest-specific gatherings online? Do these efforts ultimately empower the individuals and the group?or prove to further insulate and isolate them? Does it ultimately benefit and broaden the larger online community when we ?artificially? (as some would call it) segment ourselves? Or does such a group risk harming itself by excluding people who don't fit the demographic but have a keen interest in participating in this community? The debate will feature those who think solidarity is a necessary step to empowerment, those who think self-segmentation is equivalent to promoting self-segregation?and those who hope there is a middle ground.
